Wargame DesignerPRC/PLA Wargaming Specialist · AI-Assisted Digital Wargaming

I design and run wargames that help defense, government, education and industry teams test their decisions before they make them, with a focus on how the PLA and Chinese institutions wargame, how games can be turned against the people who play them, and AI-assisted digital wargaming.

Papers

I don’t pursue publication in academic journals. I write privately and share papers directly with practitioners, sponsors and colleagues. The papers below are examples of that work.

Offensive Wargaming: Weaponizing Wargaming for Targeting and Collection Programs
Concept paper · v0.1 · May 2024

Proposes taking professional wargame practitioners beyond analytical and educational gaming: staged and deception games inside public wargaming communities to shape the information environment and support collection on adversary capabilities and courses of action.

Ender’s Gambit: Digital Wargaming Vulnerabilities & Exploitation
White paper

Examines how open digital wargaming communities (Discord servers, Command: Modern Operations, War Thunder and similar) create intelligence and influence vulnerabilities, and how those vulnerabilities could be exploited.

Exploitation Wargaming & Conceptual Frameworks (Intelligence / Influence)
White paper

Argues that wargaming and commercial game communities are overlooked targets for collection and influence, and lays out frameworks for profiling the psychology of RED, including the idea of “wargaming without consent.”

Cognitive Exploitation in the Digital Sphere: Integrating SEME and Exploitation Wargaming
White paper

Combines the Search Engine Manipulation Effect with exploitation wargaming as a model of cognitive warfare, showing how search results and multiplayer games can be used for influence, behavioral profiling and intelligence collection.

Generative AI, Wargaming & PME
Report · 2023

How generative AI and large language models can strengthen professional military education, with an introduction to LLMs purpose-built for defense wargaming applications.

About

Kevin Williamson

Wargame designer and operations research analyst specializing in PRC/PLA wargaming and AI-assisted digital wargames, combining wargaming, analysis, OSINT, and modeling and simulation.

Much of my work looks at wargaming from the other side. I study malign wargaming: how an adversary can use a game, or the analysis that comes out of one, to shape what decision-makers believe and choose. I also use wargames as elicitation tools, structured play that draws out what participants actually assume, expect and would do, often more candidly than an interview or survey.

That lens reaches past the usual boundaries of the field. I have examined QAnon as an alternate reality game: a participatory framework of cryptic clues, puzzles and crowd-sourced “research” that recruits its audience into building the story themselves. Reading it through game design helps explain why it spread and why it held people, and that same non-traditional thinking shapes how I design and review games for clients.

Guest lecturer on PRC/PLA wargaming at Virginia Tech. U.S. Army and U.S. Navy veteran, and named an Army Mad Scientist in 2024.
